Thelma & Louise Opening Scene

Film: Thelma & Louise
Director: Ridley Scott
Year: 1991

Studied: Opening scene.

Notes summed up:
From the start of the scene to the end of the scene you still do not find out where they are taking a 2 day trip to - Creates suspense so you wait to see where they are going and what will happen on the way, so while it makes you watch on it also engages the audience.

Thelma is obviously scared of her husband, which is shown many times in the scene e.g. she starts off to ask him whether she can go on the trip but after his reply, she says something else and tries to sweet talk.

Its also shown that she thinks he may be upto no good (cheating on her) when she says "its funny how people want a carpet on a friday night" because he is a carpet salesman, and he replies "well its lucky im the ground manager, and not you" so hes obviously covering himself up with witt and making him still sound innocent and smart, trying to send across hes telling the truth.

In the end, Thelma goes off on the trip without asking, she also packs alot which could show she doesnt intend to comeback to who could be a dishonest husband, and intends to just leave.

Sound:
A mix of diagetic and non-diagetic sounds in the film.
diagetic sounds: Voices, Car, Wind, Phone ringing etc.
Non diagetic sounds: Background music (which starts as louise leaves her home to go and pick up Thelma).
